Be More Chill

Review of Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini
by Ruth B
Be More Chill is a coming of age novel about a boy, Jeremy, who wants so badly to be popular and also happens to have a crush on the prettiest girl in the grade. Out of desperation, he buys the Squip, a tiny robot that you swallow that tells you what to do to become who you want to be, or get what you want. Throughout the book, you follow Jeremy through his life, and get to know him as a character and see if he ends up getting what he really wants the most.
I really enjoyed this book, it is probably one of my favorites. The author uses a great tone of voice for Jeremy that sounds just like any other high schooler. He also puts Jeremy into some very awkward positions that put the reader on edge, making them not know what could possibly happen next. However, I must warn readers that some parts can be quite “racy” along with the use of some profanity used throughout the book so, if you’re not a fan of that, I would not recommend this book for you.
This book was really enjoyable because I felt like I could easily relate to it. The author wrote Jeremy in a way that anyone, girl or boy, could relate to him. A lot of the things Jeremy struggled with, I think, everyone has struggled with at some point regarding friends, popularity, and crushes. Be More Chill is a great reminder that you’re not alone and that if you stop and think, you’ll be able to make the right decisions...
...regardless of if you have the Squip or not.
