My Story Book Review
by Isabella S
Elizabeth Smart’s memoir, My Story, is a miraculous anecdote that draws the interest of all readers. In the book she speaks of her hardships during the vulgar nine-months of her captivity. Only fourteen years of age, Elizabeth is snatched right out of her own bed: somewhere she thought posed as a safe haven. She struggles to overcome the wrath of Brian David Mitchell as he commits the unspeakable, attempting to seize every bit of the girl’s remaining hope. Although, her great values of family and her Mormon faith transform Elizabeth to have a new, striving persona.
I found the book quite intriguing because of the great suspense. Throughout the memoir, Elizabeth endures terrifying events with unknown outcomes, making the reader want to continue reading to find out. I was also very impressed how such a young, innocent girl miraculously survived the long period of torment as her captors took every chance to strip away the little girl she used to be. Although some of the events in the book are vulgar and may be too disturbing for some readers, Elizabeth’s astounding overcoming is very powerful and heartfelt.
Overall, the book portrays the strong message of having faith in yourself and what you believe in. The plot is very uplifting and encouraging, leaving the reader astonished. It’s a quick and easy read and I really enjoyed it.
