Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner

Working Stiff
Review by Sophia D
Working Stiff by Judy Melinek follows Melinek on her journey as a forensic pathologist. Throughout the book, she tells dozens of stories about her previous cases, tells how she finds a cause of death, and even explains how she dealt with the families of the people she had investigated. Also, this book shows how Judy managed to be a doctor and still make time for her family, it even shows the perspective of her husband during some parts.
To be completely honest, I picked this book as my memoir because it was the only one I could find at the bookstore; however, I ended up loving it. It was extremely interesting to me because I have always been into doctor related stuff. Some of the stories she told went into great detail and were somewhat gruesome, but that didn’t really bother me; in fact, I found it intriguing. The book reminded me of the show Grey’s Anatomy, which is one of my all-time favorites. Not only was this book interesting to read, but it was also fun. I actually enjoyed myself while reading this book, which I don’t say often.

Before I started this book I had no idea what forensic pathology was, but when I finished I felt like I knew everything there was to know. That made me realize that I had actually been learning as I read. I never would’ve thought that reading about someone who investigated dead bodies would be fun for me, but it was. This book was a very quick read and I would recommend it to basically anyone, but especially people who want to be a doctor.
