The Pregnancy Project

Book Review: The Pregnancy Project
by Isabel A
Gaby Rodriguez’s memoir, The Pregnancy Project, is an eye-opener for readers of all varieties. The book focuses on the importance of prejudice and how it can affect many lives in a negative way. During her senior year, Gaby did a project to test stereotypes and hopefully break them. She faked her own pregnancy and deceived everyone around her. As the project comes to an end, she holds a school-wide assembly to reveal the truth about her experiment.
I loved how the story gave background about her family’s history and continued through later in Gaby’s life after the project. It gives the reader a better understanding of where Gaby comes from and how she became the person she is today. However, I wish she elaborated more on the experiment itself. The actual experiment is only described for about a chapter. Before this she describes the entire planning process and after this she describes the aftermath of the project. As a reader, I was more curious about people’s reactions, how Gaby felt throughout the experiment, and what Gaby did to help get through. These topics were barely touched on. It left me with more questions and fewer answers.

Overall I really enjoyed the book. It gave me a new outlook on life and how I perceive others. This book is a wakeup call for most of us, but most importantly an inspiration for all of us.
