If You Could be Mine by Sara Farizan
Review by Katelyn F.
I thought If You Could be Mine by Sara Farizan presented the topic of gays very realistically. It takes place in Iran making the book have a very different feel from America. In Iran you can’t be gay legally unlike America which you can be gay. However in both America and Iran gays face many problems such as discrimination and acceptance from our friends.
In the book Sahar best friend from childhood, Nasrin, is getting married off to Reza. Reza is an older doctor. Nasrin and Sahar met because their mothers were friends. They have kissed and are really close. Nasrin believes that their relationship won’t change when they get married. Sahar believes it will and set out to find a way to married her legally. I like how she tries to change herself into a man because many gays tried to changed themselves to fit in. I have some gay friends and some of the mental struggles that Sahar went through they have gone through. “Does your Baba know?”, Ali(Sahar’s cousin) cousin says. That’s a question many people ask gay people.
I think this book did a great job of keeping it real, and everyone should read. I think it will open eyes to the minorities and what they have to go through. I would give the book a five out of five.
