Love Letters...Dead (MM)

Madeline M
Love Letters to the Dead Book Review

Love Letters to the Dead was an astounding book and made me just want to keep reading.  The story is composed of numerous letters written by Laurel, a freshman girl who throughout the story holds the weight of her past of her sister dying and events that lead up to it.
This book was amazing.  The characters were so well written and it made me want to read to the end to figure out how May, Laurel’s older sister, died.  At the beginning of the story, it showed May as a brave and admirable character, but as we got further and further into the book the readers realise she’s not quite the role model that was pictured in the beginning.  I really liked Natalie and Hannah because they’re far from perfect characters, but are genuinely good people and trying their best in life.  Their romance felt like a really natural detail to incorporate in the book, and didn’t feel forced like others that I have read about.  However, even though he was a minor character, I really hated Evan.  He was honestly gross and rude and I hated his interactions with Laurel.  Sky was mostly a good character, but I really disliked the reasons he broke up with Laurel.  I felt as if he was too forceful and should have been more patient with her, especially because her sister literally died the year before and he knew about it.  I was also confused on the setting of the book.  In the beginning, it felt like it was set in the 80’s or 90’s, but towards the end it felt as if it was set in present day.
Ava Dellaira made me feel like Laurel’s troubles were my own.  Love Letters to the Dead made me feel so sad or angry every time I read it, and I’m not sure whether it was a good or a bad thing.  I never knew a book could invoke such emotion.
Love Letters to the Dead is a more mature and thought provoking book, but I would highly recommend it to anyone willing to read it.
